The Meeting of the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Marine Science and Technology (SCMSAT) was held on 7-8 October 2019 at the Falcon Room, Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel, Havelock Road, Singapore. The Meeting was chaired by Dr. Tan Koh Siang from St John’s Island National Marine Laboratory, Tropical Marine Science Institute, National University of Singapore representing SCMSAT Chairman, Dr. Si Si Hla Bu, Rector from Pathein University, Myanmar.
The Meeting was attended by delegates from the Republic of Indonesia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, the Republic of the Philippines, the Republic of Singapore and the Kingdom of Thailand as well as a representative from ASEAN Secretariat.
Dr Luki from the Research Center for Limnology, LIPI Indonesia presented the Southeast Asia Limnological Network (SEALNet) to the Meeting. The presentation highlighted the relative lack of attention for the monitoring, management, and conservation of tropical inland aquatic ecosystems in ASEAN COST.
The Meeting acknowledged the importance of sustaining freshwater ecosystems in each ASEAN Country, but also recognised the need to establish baselines to manage and sustain the many lakes, rivers, reservoirs and wetlands in ASEAN.
The Meeting also noted that Lao PDR and Indonesia agreed to develop proposals targeting the management of freshwater ecosystems
